Igbo-Etiti Council Chairman Flags Off Fertilizer, Farm Inputs Distribution.

Igbo-Etiti Council Chairman Flags Off Fertilizer, Farm Inputs Distribution.

The Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Dr. Eric Odo has flagged off the distribution of fertilizer and other farm inputs to farmers in the council area.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony on Monday in Ogbede, Odo commended Governor Peter Mbah for initiating the programme aimed at supporting farmers in rural communities.

He noted that the intervention will help boost agricultural productivity and enhance food security in the state.

The council boss explained that the farm inputs were being distributed directly to genuine farmers to prevent diversion by middlemen, who often resell such items at exorbitant prices.

Describing the initiative as a noble one, Odo expressed optimism that agriculture would contribute up to 70 percent of the projected $30 billion economy envisioned by the state government.

He also highlighted some of the council’s agricultural achievements, including the cultivation of five hectares of garden egg, yellow pepper (Ose Nsukka), cocoyam, and 14 hectares of beni-seed.

He assured that Igbo-Etiti would continue to align with the state government’s agricultural agenda and ensure that farmers in the area benefit fully from such programmes.

In his remark, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-industrialisation, Mr. Patrick Ubru, said the distribution is in fulfilment of governor’s promise to ensure agriculture takes its rightful place in Enugu.

Ubru, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Victor Ngwu, explained that the benefitting farmers were captured and profiled to weed out smugglers parading as farmers.

The Commissioner gave the assurance that all farmers captured will receive their own farm input, noting that the state government made adequate provision for it.
