Ohanaeze: Mbah’s Achievements Justify Calls for More Powers to States

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has hailed Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State over what it described as “historic developmental strides,” saying his performance underscores the need for restructuring and devolution of more powers and resources to states.

In a statement on Sunday, the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, led by Senator John Azuta Mbata, commended Mbah for inaugurating five ultramodern transport terminals, rolling out 100 out of 200 CNG mass transit buses, launching the Enugu State Modern Transport System, and constructing 80 modern bus shelters and bays.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide takes pride in Governor Mbah’s giant strides across all sectors in Enugu State. In just two years, he has revived moribund parastatals such as the United Palm Products Limited, Hotel Presidential, and NIGERGAS,” the statement signed by Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ikechukwu Bismarck Oji, read.

The group also cited ongoing projects including 260 Smart Green Schools, 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, road infrastructure works, and the completed Enugu International Conference Centre. It further lauded Mbah’s investment in security with a new Command and Control Centre, over 150 AI-enabled security vehicles, and the elimination of the Monday sit-at-home in the state.

According to Ohanaeze, Enugu has also “revolutionised” Nigeria’s power sector by establishing the first state-owned Electricity Regulatory Commission and reducing electricity tariffs.

Celebrating the new transport infrastructure, the pan-Igbo body described the Holy Ghost, Nsukka, Abakpa, and Gariki terminals as “world-class facilities” that put the South East on par with global standards.

It urged residents to take ownership of the facilities and use them responsibly.

Mbah, who last week commissioned the projects, said they align with his vision of expanding Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.

“Today’s commissioning is beyond a ribbon-cutting exercise. It ushers in a whole new experience, integrating road, rail, air, and waterways into one seamless, efficient ecosystem,” the governor said.

He added that the initiative is already generating jobs, stimulating SMEs, and creating over 20,000 employment opportunities in transport and support services.
