IGBO-ETITI LOCAL GOVERNMENT PROHIBITS MASQUERADES FROM CARRYING WEAPONS AND FLOGGING WOMEN.

Dr. Eric Odoh, Chairman Igbo Etiti LGA.

The Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area has issued a stern warning to Odoh masquerades, prohibiting them from carrying weapons, including canes, and assaulting women, girls, and perceived enemies. This directive was handed down by the council chairman, Dr. Eric Odo, during the Monthly Holy Mass at the Council's Headquarters in Ogbede.

Dr. Odo emphasized that the current administration has established measures to curb the violent actions of masquerades, which have resulted in harm to innocent citizens, untimely deaths, and life-threatening injuries. While acknowledging that masquerades are not banned in the LGA, Dr. Odo stressed that their activities must be conducted in an orderly and acceptable manner.

The council chairman also inaugurated a committee to address domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence, which will take action against the harm caused by these masquerades. Dr. Odo vowed to protect the lives and properties of the people, and warned that any masquerade who defaults the order will face the law, including imprisonment.

This development comes on the heels of a recent incident in Nsukka, where the Oriokpa Masquerade brutally attacked a female nurse, Miss Blessing Ogbonna, leaving her severely injured ¹. The incident sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for the ban of the Oriokpa Masquerade.
