Condemnation of the Killing of Igbo-Jah and Call for Immediate Action

The Save Enugu Group (SEG) vehemently condemns the brutal and senseless killing of Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah, by a police inspector at the Enugu Police Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad Headquarters on October 25, 2024. This heinous act is a stark reminder of the persistent issue of police brutality and the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within our security agencies.

We extend our deepest condolences to the people of Enugu State, the family and friends of Igbo-Jah, a beloved musician whose life was tragically cut short. The SEG stands in solidarity with the grieving family and the entire Enugu community during this difficult time.

The identified officer, Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, must face the full weight of the law. We demand that he be prosecuted to the fullest extent to serve as a deterrent to other officers who might contemplate such reckless actions for whatever reasons. It is imperative that justice is not only done but seen to be done, to restore public confidence in our law enforcement agencies.

Insp. Oxoneanji Joseph, the killer of Igbo-Jah

The SEG insists that the killing of innocent citizens by security agents in Enugu State and the entire South East of Nigeria must be brought to an immediate end. We call on the relevant authorities to implement the following measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future:

1. Enhanced Training and Psychological Evaluation: We recommend regular and comprehensive training on the use of force, conflict de-escalation, and human rights, coupled with routine psychological assessments for all officers.

2. Body Cameras for Police Officers: We urge the Enugu State government to support the police with body cameras to improve accountability and transparency. This will not only help in monitoring police conduct but also minimize extortions and corrupt practices by police personnel in the state.

3. Independent Oversight Bodies: Establishment of independent bodies to investigate complaints against police officers to ensure impartiality and fairness.

4. Community Policing Initiatives: we call for the strengthening relationships between the police and the community to build trust and cooperation.

We commend Governor Peter Mbah and his administration for their swift response in demanding justice for Igbo-Jah. The Governor's immediate call for a comprehensive investigation demonstrates a commitment to justice and accountability. We urge the state government to continue supporting measures that will enhance the professionalism and accountability of the police force in Enugu State.

The SEG remains committed to advocating for the rights and safety of all citizens. We will continue to monitor this case closely and ensure that justice is served.

Hon. Pascal Okolo JP,

Publicity Secretary, Save Enugu Group (SEG).
