UNN GOVERNING COUNCIL INITIATES MOVES TO APPOINT NEW ACTING VC, JUST TWO MONTHS AFTER EZEOKONKWO'S ELECTION.
In a stunning turn
of events, the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has commenced the process of appointing another acting Vice Chancellor, barely two months after Professor Romanus Ezeokonkwo's election.
According to a letter dated August 1, 2024, and signed by General Ike Nwachukwu, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, the Council has requested the UNN Senate to recommend five suitable candidates for consideration as acting Vice Chancellor, pending the appointment of a substantive one.
This development comes as a surprise, as Professor Ezeokonkwo has not yet completed the six-month tenure required by law before a substantive Vice Chancellor can be elected.
The letter, obtained by Mc O one Chat News reports, outlines specific criteria for the nominated candidates, including a minimum of eight years as a full Professor, prior experience as Provost or Deputy Vice Chancellor, and a minimum age of 65 years.
The UNN Senate has been directed to convene and forward the recommended names to the Council by August 14, 2024, for consideration and subsequent appointment.
This unexpected move has raised eyebrows within the university community, with many expressing concern over the short notice and the backdating of the letter.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
