*COURT ORDERS UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA TO CEASE HOSTEL PROJECT, AWARDS N20 MILLION DAMAGES TO HOST COMMUNITY*

In a landmark judgment delivered on Tuesday, a High Court sitting in Nsukka, Enugu State, granted an interlocutory injunction restraining the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) from proceeding with a contentious hostel project. The order was issued by Justice Hyacinthia Urunwa Ezeugwu in suit No N/86/2020, filed by Hon Nnaemeka Aleke on behalf of Obukpa community against UNN and Viagem Property and Investment Limited.

The plaintiff had sought an injunction to halt the development of the 11,900-room hostel, alleging environmental degradation and seeking N1 billion in damages. After a four-year legal battle, the court upheld the plaintiff's claims, citing "incontrovertible" evidence from eight witnesses and a site visit that revealed environmental threats.

The court ordered the defendants to cease further development pending the implementation of erosion control measures and awarded N20 million in damages to the plaintiff, plus N500,000 in litigation costs.

Barr C.I. Odoh, counsel for the plaintiff, hailed the verdict as a victory for the community, stating that the court's decision had "saved the future of the community" by recognizing the environmental hazards posed by the project.
