In the labyrinthine corridors of the workplace, the dichotomy between employees and their superiors can be a veritable minefield of complexities. One question that perennially arises is whether an employee should lavish effusive praise upon their superior. While some posit that it is an indispensable requisite to demonstrate fealty and gratitude, others aver that it can be perceived as duplicitous or even deleterious to one's vocational trajectory.

On one hand, the act of praising one's superior can have a plethora of salutary effects. It can foster a convivial work environment, redound to the benefit of the superior's ego, and even precipitate an increase in job security. A superior who feels valorized and esteemed is more likely to be benevolent and solicitous towards their employees' needs.

On the other hand, excessive or obsequious praise can be perceived as insincere or Machiavellian. It can create a culture of sycophancy, wherein employees prioritize appeasing their superior over the efficacious discharge of their duties. Moreover, it can lead to favoritism and disparate treatment of other employees.

In the context of the Enugu State government, the question of praising one's superior assumes a different dimension. The appointees of Governor Dr. Peter Mbah have been excoriated for their perceived sycophancy and excessive praise of the governor. While it is natural to express gratitude towards one's leader, the censure raises important questions about the motivations underlying such praise.

Are the appointees genuinely grateful for the governor's leadership, or are they seeking to curry favor and advance their own careers? Is the praise a sincere expression of admiration, or a calculated maneuver to gain influence and power?

Ultimately, whether or not an employee should praise their superior depends on the motivations and context. While genuine appreciation and gratitude are essential, excessive or insincere praise can be detrimental to a healthy work environment. As we navigate the complex dynamics of workplace relationships, it is crucial to approach praise and appreciation with authenticity and integrity.
