CNPP Congratulates Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere on Court Victory, Calls for End to Irrational Internal Party Disputes and Upholding of Party Supremacy.

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) congratulates Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, on his recent court victory which nullified his expulsion from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The CNPP hails the judgment of the Abuja High Court as a resounding affirmation of the rule of law, due process, and the constitutional rights of elected representatives within the Nigerian democratic framework. This ruling has once again demonstrated the judiciary’s role as the bastion of democracy, protecting not only the rights of individuals but also the integrity of political processes in our country.

We commend the court’s clarity that only the duly constituted organs of a political party—in this case, the National Executive Committee (NEC)—possess the constitutional authority to take disciplinary actions against its members. This reinforces the importance of internal party democracy and warns against the dangers of factional power plays and personalized vendettas.

The CNPP therefore urges all political actors, particularly those in leadership positions within political parties, to desist from irrational internal disputes that only serve to weaken their institutions and sow seeds of discord. Political parties are the foundational pillars of any democracy, and as such, must operate in accordance with their constitutions, rules, and regulations. Arbitrary actions, especially those motivated by personal grievances rather than collective party interest, have no place in a maturing democracy.

We emphasize that strict adherence to the principle of party supremacy and discipline remains indispensable to the growth of Nigeria’s democratic culture. Political parties must not allow themselves to be hijacked by individuals who seek to undermine unity and cohesion for selfish ends. The pursuit of personal vendettas at the expense of party stability erodes public confidence, fosters instability, and ultimately dwarfs the democratic progress Nigeria has made since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

The CNPP calls on all political stakeholders to recommit to the values of fairness, justice, and inclusion in managing party affairs. Only through such commitment can our democracy be deepened and made truly representative of the will of the people.

We stand in solidarity with Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere and all those who continue to defend democratic ideals against authoritarian tendencies within our political institutions.

Signed:

Comrade James Ezema

Deputy National Publicity Secretary

Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP)
